TBT #5: “I Said Go” by Novi Novak

The 5th Throwback Thursday post comes from a more underground artist. Novi Novak is a talented rapper from Chicago. He came out with his first mixtape, Hibernation’s Over, in 2011, so he’s still pretty new to the game. “I Said Go,” released in late 2010, is by far my favorite off that mixtape, and it could be one of my favorites in my whole library. The hook is an overlooked aspect of rap songs because it’s often hard to do with success. The ability to make a good chorus, however, is a skill Novi Novak definitely possesses, shown clearly in this song. The beat is also great as Novi shows off his flow and lyrical abilities.

TBT #4: “Always (On My Grizzly)” by Chiddy Bang Feat. eLDee The Don

I missed last week’s, so I thought I’d do a second throwback post for ya’ll. “Always (On My Grizzly),” which appeared on Chiddy Bang’s superb 2011 mixtape, Peanut Butter and Swelly, is easily one of my favorites by the duo. While I always love Chiddy’s witty, punchline-based verses, what stands out most to me on this track is the beat. Xaphoon Jones is such a talented producer, and songs like this are clear testaments to that. Be sure to also check out the bonus, which is another great Chiddy Bang song that came out with their 2009 Swelly Express mixtape. It’s cool to see how much they’ve grown as artists over the years.

TBT #3: “Do It In The AM (Lucky Date & Eli Smith Remix)” by Frankmusik Feat. Far East Movement

Since I downloaded it a couple summers ago, Lucky Date and Eli Smith’s remix to “Do It In The AM” has easily been one my favorite EDM tracks. The builds up are solid, the vocals by Frankmusik are catchy, and the drop is great. Overall, it’s just a sick song and definitely a (successful) go-to at parties.

“Like Me” by Los Feat. Juicy J

Los_Becoming_King-front-large

Los recently released a mixtape entitled “Becoming King.” I don’t know too much about the Baltimore native, but after a brief listen-through of the his tape, I really liked this song by far. The verses are solid, the Ryan Smitty beat bumps, and, as a big Juicy J fan, I love the feature. The Bonus is another song I liked off the project, which you check out/download in its entirety here via Datpiff.
