“Though as SBTRKT I am one person, I’ve always tried to champion the idea of bringing together artists who are from different places both musically and geographically.
For this record I worked with a small group of collaborators, most of whom I had not collaborated with before. Instead of an open-ended collaboration where studio jam sessions would lead to songs, I approached collaborators who I felt would be most suited to the overall ideas I had already collated.
To me it feels similar to my first album — a small group of vocalists, productions that are fairly stripped down and a project filled with emotion. These songs are what I feel to be the most interesting musical stories I’ve made to date.”
A few days ago Los Angeles producer, Zhu, released “Testarossa Music”, the third tune revealed from his upcoming EP Genesis Series. Featuring Gallant, this compelling tune is driven by a wandering groove and jazzy keys. The heavy Led Zeppelin-esque opening guitar riff is quickly contrasted by a pulsing ambient beat and fervent harmonies of both Gallant and Zhu. Hopefully we will hear another collaboration between the two complementing styles. Check out www.generationwhy.com, essentially just a giant word scramble, and see if you can determine who else Zhu will be collaborating with on Genesis Series.
Between dropping 4th of July party mixes, touring, and everything else the mashup-afficionado gets up to, producer 3LAU found the time to release “Alive Again”, off his upcoming EP.
Featuring beautiful vocals from Emma Hewitt and a stunning drop, this crossover track, that he’s dubbed “progressive trance”, strikes the perfect balance of energy and emotion. The track manages to be both huge and ephemeral at the same time; which is no easy feat to accomplish. Just hours into the week and the bar’s already been set to an almost untouchable level.
The Chainsmokers have been on a hot streak this year. “Roses” follows their two most recent hit singles, “Let You Go” and “Good Intentions”. “Roses” incorporates the same optimistic style of their previous recordings. The parading melody sets up the slow, jazzy drop that has the faculty to entrance any listener. The Chainsmokers will be performing at Lolla on Sunday.
Can someone please call me an ambulance?! WOW! Armin van Buuren has absolutely killed it with his latest track, a remix of Ramin Djawad’s Game of Thrones Theme! The track opens up with a, quite typical, Van Buuren introduction but quickly delves into the catchy, and immediately recognizable, theme song of the hit HBO series. As the track carries through, Van Buuren makes some fantastic alterations to Djawad’s, already outstanding, original piece and makes it that much better.
Armada Music’s Rodg is under the spotlight with Armin van Buuren’s A State of Trance Episode 711. For this episode, Rodg’s track “Lantau” was given the title as the “Progressive Pick” for the episode.
As you give the track a listen, you can definitely see why Armin chose to highlight this track. From the epic build to the mellow plucks leading to a more room-filling chord progression, an euphoric festival vibe is created. Much like what artists like Eric Prydz does, Rodg sets the mood for a slow, epic build as it completely takes over your ears.
Today, when I decided to check out Markus Schulz’s recent productions, I stumbled across this awesome original track and it’s accompanying music video. Deviating from his consistently legendary trance formulas, Schulz opens up this track with some faster paced electronic beats. For the video, viewers follow the activities of a beautiful young woman as she moves about in the exciting, endearing and visually pleasing, theme-park based festival. The video, excellently, embodies the upbeat and electrifying rhythm that was produced with the intent to spark those, “hedonistic, feel-good moments”. Overall, the track and the video, are a fantastic addition to Schulz’s already diverse range of production.
