Sunday, June 18, thousands of music fans took to the streets of downtown Toronto to celebrate some of the biggest names in entertainment. Brampton R&B songstress Alessia Cara & Joe Jonas co-hosted the highly anticipated affair which featured thrilling performances from artists such as Lorde, Imagine Dragons, Arkells, and more.
With the nation’s 150th birthday around the corner, The iHeartRadio Much Music Video Awards (simply known as the MMVA’s) served as the unofficial pre-party, despite the threat of rain and thunderstorms. As expected, this year’s red carpet saw a plethora of stylish outfits put together, while others (most notably Mariana’s Trench) opted for an outlandish introduction. What makes the MMVA’s particularly special, is the level of accessibility that allows fans to attend in comparison to other major award shows.
Ethan Chou, 17, who arrived at 4:30 pm ahead of the 9:00 pm start time told the Toronto Star:
“I like how it’s outside and it’s free -it’s close to my house but I’ve never been to one before. I think we were on TV a few times, too. We asked a camera woman to record us.”
Some of the night’s biggest winners include:
Video of the Year: A Tribe Called Red f. Yasiin Bey, Narcy & Black Bear — “R.E.D.”
Best Pop Video: Shawn Mendes — “Mercy”
Best New Canadian Artist: PARTYNEXTDOOR
Best New International Artist: Camila Cabello

While the iHeartRadio Much Music Video Awards have come and gone, fans can revere in the fact that Canada’s music scene continues to produce some of today’s leading artists without any signs of slowing down.
